Pioneer plastic card manufacturer, SSI Cards Marketing & Direct Mail has announced the launch of their all-new NVIO™ Cards. The innovative range has been developed from fully eco-friendly plastic materials and covers the complete spectrum of gift cards, postcard mailers, membership cards, and loyalty cards.
With this new line of products, the Edmond, Oklahoma based company has successfully met ASTM D5511-18* standards. While maintaining integrity under normal usage, the cards retain a similar look and feel to their traditional counterparts.
Pioneering innovation
SSI Executive Vice President explains – “Meeting the stringent ASTM standards for biodegradation is a vital step towards ending the nearly infinite life of plastic cards in landfills. It was important to find a solution beyond less effective board stock and paper cards. The technology has been years in development, and we’re delighted to be part of this pioneering work.”
“The benefits are not only environmental. They are commercial, too. Plastic postcards give distinct advantages over paper postcards with redemption rates as much as 25 times greater, with astronomically higher ROI.”
In a fitting shade of green, the unique magnetic stripe for NVIO™ gift cards presented an additional developmental challenge. Stores, and more importantly, consumers, enjoy the more personal touch of handing a gift card to their recipient.
Leading from the front
From their earliest beginnings in 1969, SSI Cards has led from the front. They were among the first to apply barcodes on laminated ID cards. Later, SSI was commissioned to create the first tele-card, now a collector’s item called the TeleTicket.
In the 1990s, Blockbuster Video sought SSI’s card solutions to identify specific store information and debit transactions, creating the first gift card. The technology had evolved from a previous SSI Cards and Blockbuster Video collaboration – the ‘Universal Card’. This removed the need for individual location membership cards. The Acclaim Mailer in the 2000s was a natural progression of the Universal Card.
50 years on from printing its first bar code card, SSI Cards continues its tradition of developing new and exciting products.
*Standards for ASTM D5511-18 are described as, in part, biodegradation of a plastic within a high-solids anaerobic digestion unit is an important phenomenon because it will affect the decomposition of other waste materials enclosed by the plastic and the resulting quality and appearance of the digestate after an anaerobic digestion process. Biodegradation of plastics could allow for the safe disposal of these plastics through aerobic and anaerobic solid-waste-treatment plants. This procedure has been developed to permit the determination of the rate and degree of anaerobic biodegradability of plastic products when placed in a high-solids anaerobic digester for (sic) the production of digestate from municipal solid waste.” (Source: www.astm.org/Standards/D5511.htm)
